yes, ladies and gentlemen...the outfits you see my friend keaton and i wearing are made out of duct tape. the dress, tux pants, tux jacket, tie, corsage, boutinnere, purse and shawl (which isn't pictured here, but there was one) are made of duct tape with a very thin backing (the kind that goes under embroidery only thinner). we did not duct tape over clothes. we made those outfits. my necklace has duct tape on it, but it was supposed to look like pearls with a big diamond in the center. keaton's shoes have duct tape on the tips.
the musical notes you see on my dress (with the exception of the giant treble clef) were drawn by me. my friend nick drew the staff but i drew the notes.
the side of keaton's tie that you see started out totally white. he made that keyboard with nothing but his tie, a ruler and a black permanent marker.
the stripes on keaton's pants and our big treble clefs are paper taped down with clear tape.
it took us approximately two months to make these from start to finish. we spent all spring break working on them(that was the week we started)
making the duct tape fabric was prolly the toughest part. that was basically what the whole first week was about. thank God we had a week without all the hassles of school in which to experiment.
keaton's outfit it sewn. we found out the hard way that the sticky side of the duct tape WILL, in fact, jam a sewing machine. my outfit is held together by staples, and the back was lace-up.
NOTE: for those of you that decide to attempt duct tape prom outfits like us: duct tape expands the longer you wear it. every time i got up from dinner that night, my friend jennifer had to help me adjust it. and do not fool yourself into thinking that it breathes at ALL. you will be sticky and gross by the end of the night, no matter what you do. sorry. and girls, if you have a womanly figure like myself, it also likes to bunch up around the waist. also, if you're wearing a long dress it's quite difficult to walk up and down stairs.
we entered this into a contest. we have not heard back about whether or not we won. but let me tell you, just seeing the look on everyone's faces when we walked into prom was prize enough for me (although money is quite nice, not gonna lie )
UPDATE: we did not win the scholarship. but it was still worth the memory
That's freakin awesome!! I would love to have a dress made from duck-tape, and especially the kick-ass one your wearing. Your dress and your friends tux look flippin sweet!!!

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
